A satellite RF board requires clear environmental and electrical requirements before a laminate is selected. Ground-terminal equipment and flight hardware have very different qualification needs; a material used in one does not automatically qualify a board for the other.
Layout decisions to resolve early
- Allocate insertion loss and phase error across feedlines, connectors and active devices.
- Specify temperature conditions and assess their effect on critical paths.
- Review RF and power/thermal grounding as a complete mechanical assembly.
- Define procurement traceability and qualification requirements for the actual program.
Choose the stackup with the signal path
Identify which connections need controlled impedance and which geometric structures require full electromagnetic analysis. Request the finished copper and dielectric dimensions, not just the nominal material thickness. A microstrip estimate is useful for exploring a candidate feedline, while launches, antennas and coupled structures need models appropriate to their geometry.
Make the prototype measurable
Create a validation matrix that ties each requirement to a measurement or inspection. Do not describe a board as space-qualified based only on its laminate family or visual construction.
Prepare the manufacturing handoff
Supply the board outline, layer stack, laminate grades, drill data, fabrication notes and critical tolerances. Mark features whose dimensions should not be changed without design approval. Include a clear question list for the fabricator so the release does not depend on undocumented assumptions.
What to include in your project inquiry
- The product architecture and target frequency range.
- The board size, intended quantity and proposed materials.
- The principal performance constraint and available test equipment.
- Design files or a sketch, if available. Attachments remain optional.
